Our history

In 1999, PAnTher was the 1st INRA research Joint Unit created at the Veterinary School of Nantes initially composed of a faculty of teacher-researchers specializing in veterinary pathology and board certified by the European College of Veterinary Pathologists. PAnTher rapidly developed a nationally recognized expertise in animal models of pathology. In addition to its veterinarian staff, the lab included scientists and engineers that reinforced its research and training activities.

In 2004, PAnTher further extended its activities to the field of rare diseases affecting the muscle and the nervous system through applied research work on gene and cell-based therapeutic strategies in large model animals (dystrophic dog, SMA cat, non-human primate).

In 2006, with the support of INRA, PAnTher created its open platform dedicated to comparative pathology, APEX (Anatomic Pathology Expertise for Research).

In 2011, APEX began to develop new expertise in bio-imaging through the implementation of highly technological microscopy equipments and skills. The implementation of a close collaboration with Nikon Company and the MicropiCell Platform of Nantes University led to the creation of the Center of Excellence Nikon Nantes (CENN) in 2016.

Our work on innovative therapies opened up fundamental questions on diseases mechanisms and led to our current strategy: the development of integrated approaches to address biological, pathophysiological and therapeutic issues as a whole.
